The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher: A Shocking Murder and the Undoing of a Great Victorian Detective

The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher by Kate Summerscale
I put together a Victorian Detective novel display to feature an amazing book I just finished, which is now available in paperback. I've been reading mysteries and detective fiction all my life and I found this book fascinating. It's part true crime drama (a la Devil in the White City and Thunderstruck) part detective character study. Throw in some Dickens, Collins and Poe, who were around at the time and totally fascinated with what the new "detectives" were doing. It made me stop and think about all the detective fiction I read and how they are portayed by their authors. The display features these "first detective stories" too, so come by and check it out.

The School of Essential Ingredients

The School of Essential Ingredients by Erica Bauermeister
This is one of those books that once you pick it up, you know you are going to love it. Not complicated, not dramatic, just a beautifully written story which revolves around a cooking class. One by one the students are transformed by the aromas, flavors, and textures of Lillian's food, including a white-on-white cake that prompts wistful reflections on the sweet fragility of love and a peppery heirloom tomato sauce that seems to spark one romance but end another. Brought together by the power of food and companionship, the lives of the characters mingle and intertwine, united by the revealing nature of what can be created in the kitchen.

Among the Mad

Among the Mad by Jacqueline Winspear
I am always excited to read the next in the Maisie Dobb's series. This one felt a bit darker than the previous books as she explores the world of mental illness and the institutions that existed in the 1920's. It reminded me a bit of the bestseller The Professor and the Madman.

Snarf Attack, Underfoodle, and the Secret of Life: The Riot Brothers Tell All

What to Do With My Books
a poem by Mary Amato

Don't use my book to swat a fly
or squash a juicy bug.
Don't use one as a paper plate
or coaster for your mug.
Don't tie one on each foot to use
like snowshoes in a storm,
or burn in your fireplace
to keep your toesies warm.

Please open it and have a seat
and read it to the end.
And if you like it, don't forget
to share it with a friend.

Come meet the clever and funny Mary Amato on Saturday, March 14th at 2 pm here at Wellesley Booksmith. WE like her books -- so we are sharing her with you, OUR friends!

dog of the week

chezzychezzy
Chezzy is an absolutely adorable 5-month-old Golden Doodle who was out and about with his owner, Karen. Chezzy was hard at work practicing his training, and doing a fabulous job with his "down" and "stay", even when an enthusiastic bookseller approached him with camera in hand. Keep up the good work, Chezzy!
